Special Characters and the C3D Survey Database
Monday, 19 September 2011 20:11
When naming folders and files, be careful when using “Special” Characters in the name. Special characters such as commas (,), pound signs (#) and forward slashes (/) to name a few can be very troublesome and difficult to trouble shoot.
Recently, I’ve run into a couple of issues where special characters were included in the folder and/or file name. The first involved the pound (#) sign in a survey point file name. Because of the pound sign, the file failed to import with no real clue as to why. Ultimately, the character was noticed and removed. The file imported without issue.
The other involved the Civil 3D Survey Database. The path for the SDB included the single quote (‘) in one of the folders name, and when the user tried to access the database he received the error “The survey database does not exist and could not be recreated”. If you search the web for this error you will be inundated with many and a plethora of possible solutions. Before you try all of that fun stuff… check the name for special characters.
Personally, I stick with the tried and true spaces, dashes and underscores in the folder and file names. Perhaps a bit boring and old-school, but I don’t run into naming issues. However, it’s still your call.
Thanks and Enjoy, Doug LOCKED REVIT FILES
Tuesday, 30 August 2011 20:19
For files that cannot be moved, deleted, renamed, or opened in Revit, there is a free tool that you can use to at least temporarily unlock the files so that they can be fixed. Try out www.lockhunter.com for the free tool to unlock these files. After installing and running the program you can select files that are corrupted and either unlock them or just completely delete them. Also if that still doesn’t work you can right-click on the offending file and find out the reason why it is locked in its current location from a Windows Explorer view. The root reason that these files get locked is because Windows is having a issue generating a thumbnail preview for the file using the Revit preview component. What may be worse, is that every other file (or at least files that follow the file that is locked) also will not display the Thumbnail preview in Windows Explorer.
